The last iteration of Porsche’s original sports car, the 356C offered improvements over its predecessors including four-wheel disc brakes, revised suspension tuning, and a more refined interior. This Karmann-built 356C 1600 Coupe has been refinished in Slate Grey and was reportedly acquired by the seller in 2014 from a local private seller after being garage-stored for approximately 15 years. Equipped with a period-correct rebuilt engine by a Porsche specialist and accompanied by a Porsche Certificate of Authenticity, this iconic final-year example is now being offered for auction by its seller out of California.
The Karmann bodywork on this example has been professionally stripped to bare metal and refinished in Slate Grey. Details include a chrome driver’s side mirror, chrome bumper overriders with integrated exhaust outlets, a twin-grille decklid, and facotry 5.5"x15" slotted chrome wheels with Porsche-crested hubcaps and Dunlop tires. Additionally, Hella fog lights have been installed. The seller notes minor paint imperfections that have been touched up as well as a crack in the rear passenger side panel. Detailed images are provided in the gallery.
The driver is presented with a reupholstered red leather and vinyl interior. Equipment includes red perforated leather seat centers, matching wool square-weave carpeting, a matching vinyl dashboard and door inserts, and black floor mats. A black-finished 3-spoke steering wheel frames VDO instrumentation with chrome bezels, while additional chrome accents can be found throughout the interior. The seller notes the clock is currently inoperable.
Power comes from an air-cooled flat-four engine with dual carburetors which was reportedly fitted with larger pistons and cylinders to achieve a 1720cc displacement. The rear wheels are driven through a numbers-matching 4-speed manual gearbox. The seller notes that the replacement engine was completely rebuilt and modified by the expert hands of David Bustamente in Lake Havasu, along with the brakes rebuilt and new hoses installed. Additionally, Bilstein shocks were equipped and the car was corner balanced at a local shop in California.
This sale will include a clean title and a spare tire.
The seller would like you to know: “Thank you for visiting my action. I have owned this car since 2014 and has always been garaged. All maintenance is up to date. I recently drove the car from LA to Cambria to the 356 Club Concours. The car is a super nice driver and handles great!”

@witz. That crack in the fender, is it a crack in the paint or is the metal of the fender cracked?
Sorry if that was answered, I don't see it.Flag as inappropriate Like Reply

I saw this car in Cambria for the North/South 356 event. Beautiful. What a color combo. The Bustamente motor rebuild is a big plus. He has great reputation for building complete cars and motors. I'm in.

@artichoke, the car was red/ black. The trans is original, there are no rust or other issues. I don’t know what happened to the original motor.

Is it the original exterior and interior colors? Any rust or structural issues? Any mechanical or electrical issues? Was this engine from a 65 356? Do you know what happened to the original engine? Its it the original transmission?
Thanks,
Bob

@DrT, good question. I don;t know where that came from, but I had Pcar Mkt revise the text. The motor is a correct 65' C motor that runs strong and does not leak or smoke.

What is a "borrowed engine"; must it be returned? If not, what is its year & source? Thanks.
