These air fryer smashed Brussels sprouts are crispy on the outside, and soft and tender on the inside. Satisfy your cravings without compromising a nutritious diet.

Yep, these are easy to make! It takes a few steps just because you have to steam/boil your brussels sprout first. But once that’s done, the rest moves pretty quickly! These are perfect for a healthy snack or appetizer.

Should I Boil My Brussel Sprouts Before Air Frying?

Yes! If you don’t, they won’t fully cook in the center, leaving you with crispy outsides and raw insides.

Why Do My Brussel Sprouts Burn In An Air Fryer?

Typically, because you either haven’t cooked them first, or because you have the temperature too high. With brussels sprouts, the best approach is to lower the temperature and cook for just a tiny bit longer.

Can I Air Fry Brussel Sprouts Without Oil?

In theory, you could. But they won’t turn out as well. The outter leaves tend to burn more than crisp. But the good thing is, you don’t need to use a lot of oil to get things perfectly cooked.

Why Won’t My Air Fryer Smashed Brussel Sprouts Get Crispy?

If you are making them in the oven, it’s usually because the heat isn’t high enough. But in an air fryer, its probably because you haven’t cooked them long enough. And in the case of smashed brussels sprouts, it’s critical to make sure you smash them evenly so they all cook at the same rate. And lastly, keep in mind that every air fryer is slightly different. Yours may cook at a slightly different temperature than mine. So you may need to make necessary adjustments for your own appliance.

How To Make Brussels Sprouts Crispy

One way to ensure crispy air fryer smashed brussels sprouts is to dip them in beaten egg. My recipe here doesn’t call for it, but it’s one way to get a serious crunch from the finished sprouts.

Can You Make Frozen Brussel Sprouts In An Air Fryer?

Yes, it’s doable. And you can do a quick google search for actual recipes. But in my experience, I do not recommend it. You can certainly purchase them frozen and defrost them before using them, but every time I’ve tried to cook them from frozen, I get burnt outsides and raw insides. Maybe there’s a magic trick that other food bloggers know that I just haven’t figured out yet. Or maybe its just my air fryer. But if you really want to do this, I recommend looking up specific directions for it.

Recipe Variations

You can also add any of the following to change up the flavors from batch to batch.

  • Balsamic vinegar– It’s best to drizzle or sprinkle this on after cooking.
  • Parmesan Cheese
  • Rosemary – I find that ground rosemary works best.
  • Ground black pepper

Air Fryer Smashed Brussels Sprout Ingredients

Brussels sprouts– cleaned and trimmed as needed.

Oil – Any oil will work. But oil with a higher smoke point is best for air frying. Oil such as coconut oil or avocado oil. Olive oil may be healthy, but it has a very low smoke point.

Garlic granules – garlic powder works too.

Dried thyme – Ground or leaves. I used leaves, but ground thyme will adhere to the sprouts better.

Salt – I used pink Himalayan salt, but use whatever you normally use in the kitchen.

Oven Instructions

Follow all prep as listed above, (including dipping them in egg if you want to do that), but leave them on the cookie sheet instead of placing them into an air fryer.

Bake for 15 minutes at 425 degrees F, then flip them over. Bake for 5 – 10 more minutes. If they aren’t brown enough for you, you can turn on the broiler in the last 2 – 3 minutes. But watch them closely for burning.

Storage

If you have leftovers, simply store them in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 5 days.

Freezing

Freezing these is not recommended. They tend to fall apart once thawed.

Reheating Air Fryer Smashed Brussels Sprouts

To reheat, either place them in the microwave for a minute or so, or warm them in a pan with a tiny sprits of oil.

FAQs

Why did my Brussel sprouts burn in the air fryer? ›

Why did my brussels sprouts burn in the air fryer? If you don't shake the air fryer basket throughout the cooking process, you risk the sprouts burning before they are fully cooked. Can I air fry brussels sprouts without oil? While air-frying sprouts without oil will cook them, they won't be soft in the middle.

Why won't my Brussel sprouts get crispy? ›

If you want your roasted Brussels sprouts to be seriously crispy, you need to crank up the heat. Roasting at a low temperature won't allow them to brown properly, so you want to get that oven nice and hot before tossing in your baking sheet. Follow this tip: Roast Brussels sprouts at a minimum of 400°F.

Why do you soak Brussel sprouts before cooking? ›

It turns out that giving Brussels sprouts a good soak can help them to cook evenly throughout. Not only will the sprouts have a better texture after being soaked, but you won't have to choose between burning the outside and undercooking the inside.

When should you not use brussel sprouts? ›

Throw out fresh brussel sprouts that have a foul odor, yellow or wilted leaves, a mushy or slimy texture, or dark spots. Use fresh brussel sprouts within 1–2 weeks of getting them. Store the brussel sprouts in a plastic bag inside your fridge, and wash them before cooking them.

Can you put foil in an air fryer? ›

The great news about air fryers is that you can use foil along with parchment paper to cook your food in an air fryer. Just remember that if it's safe and effective to use in a conventional oven, it will work just fine in an air fryer.

Should you cut brussel sprouts in half before cooking? ›

One of the most common ways to cut a Brussels sprout is in half or quarters. By doing so, you reduce the size of the sprouts, speeding up cooking.

Why did my brussel sprouts come out mushy? ›

Moisture is the enemy of crispiness.

There's nothing wrong with soft and chewy Brussels, but if your goal is the type of crispy Brussels that they're serving at your favorite bistro you MUST thoroughly dry the surface of the sprouts before sautéing and/or roasting them. If they are wet they will steam instead of crisp.

How long to air fry brussel sprouts at 375 without? ›

Air fry and serve: Place the Brussels sprouts in a single layer in the basket of the air fryer. Return the basket to the fryer and cook at 375°F until the sprouts are tender and the outside leaves are crisp and golden brown in spots, about 12 minutes, tossing halfway.

Should you parboil brussel sprouts before frying? ›

Parboiling Brussels sprouts before frying is a good technique to ensure they cook evenly and become tender on the inside while allowing for a crispy exterior when fried. However, it's not always necessary but we think it works here to create a soft middle and crisp exterior in the pan.

Should I boil my brussel sprouts before roasting? ›

Unlike other vegetables, Brussels sprouts can be parboiled (even a day ahead) to reduce the roasting time without hurting their texture. That means the sprouts can be popped in the oven while the meat is resting before carving. Of course, if the main course is grilled or pan-cooked, the oven will be free for roasting.

Is it better to roast brussel sprouts whole or cut in half? ›

To maximize the flat areas, which get the most crispy surface area, cut your Brussels sprouts in half. If your Brussels sprouts are very small, you can leave them whole (and if they are very large, quarter them).

Why aren't brussel sprouts bitter anymore? ›

Over the last twenty years, farmers have mellowed the "unpleasant" flavor of brussels sprouts by breeding a vegetable that contains fewer bitter compounds or glucosinolates. So, brussels sprouts just taste better than they used to when we were kids. The rub is that glucosinolates help protect sprouts against pests.

How do you keep vegetables from burning in an air fryer? ›

That's because these mini convection ovens rely on a constant flow of air to move the high-temp heat around the food for all-over crispness. To minimise the chance of food burning, make sure there are at least five inches of space on all sides.

Why do my vegetables burn in the air fryer? ›

The foods are too light

“So something lightweight like spinach, as it starts to fry, ends up getting up in the heating coil—and then it burns, setting off the smoke alarm.”

Why do my brussel sprouts burn? ›

Brussel Sprouts are pretty low maintenance as far as vegetables go, but that doesn't mean they couldn't use a little TLC before you cook them. Trimming them helps eliminate part of the woody stem, but it can be tricky to trim them just right. Trim them too much and the leaves break away and burn during roasting.

How do you keep broccoli from burning in an air fryer? ›
