A Healthier Version of the Pumpkin Spice Latte

For weeks, I’ve been listening to people talk and debate about pumpkin spice lattes. Some people think they came out too early, others want them around year-round.

Me? I was just annoyed I couldn’t have one!

Scott and I have been doing the Whole30 (today marks day 29!) so dairy and sugar were a definite no.

So, we decided to make our own version— a healthy pumpkin spice latte recipe!

A Whole30-Friendly Latte

This latte is dairy free, vegan, paleo and has Whole30-approved ingredients.

For those of you following Whole30, be warned that this could fall in theSWYPO category.

Personally, after 3+ weeks of no coffee (black coffee is not bae, nope) this was a really nice weekend treat—I split one with Scott and was more than satisfied.

Unlike itsmore well-known counterpart, this healthy pumpkin spice latte recipe has real pumpkin, just the perfect amount of spice and a nice froththanks to blending the coconut milk.

I don’t think I’ll be hitting up Starbucks for this one anymore, I have a new favorite PSL! 🙂

Tastes Better Than Starbucks

I might be biased, but since my latte has real pumpkin puree in it, I actually prefer it over the Starbucks one!

I know that Starbucks updated their lattes and now the pumpkin spice sauce contains pumpkin puree, but it still isn’t as thick and creamy as this homemade version.

How To Make A Sugar-Free Pumpkin Spice Latte

Whether you are trying to eat low-carb, paleo, vegan, or Whole30, this latte fits into all of those diets!

Does it taste sweet? Not really. Honestly, it has a creamy and filling texture with a warm and almost spicy flavor. It actually reminds me of eating pumpkin pie with a strong coffee.

The secret to making a sugar-free pumpkin spice latte is the non-dairy creamer. If you are on a low-carb or keto diet, then you should use something that is unsweetened.

Frequently Asked Questions About This Pumpkin Spice Latte

Before i share this delicious and healthy latte recipe, here are a couple of questions I received from a few readers and even had myself when I was making this.

What’s the best non-dairy creamer?

For my latte, I used canned, full-fat coconut milk. This makes it really thick and creamy without any extra carbs. Plus, coconut milk is an excellent source of healthy fats!

Other choices that you can try include unsweetened almond milk creamer or soy milk creamer.

Oat milk is a safe non-dairy option, but it isn’t low-carb. It sure does taste good though!

Does sugar make it unhealthy?

There is a lot of debate out there about the healthiness of sugar. I can only tell you what I experienced when I did the Whole30 and what I’ve learned from my keto-diet friends.

Almost everyone agrees that sugar (and syrups) are a treat that you should enjoy in moderation.

If you don’t like how this tastes without the sugar, try adding a splash of a sugar-free sweetener like monk fruit sweetener or erythritol. Then, you can have something sweet without the carbs.

What’s the best blender to use?

For this recipe, you’ll need a blender. I personally recommend the Vitamix blender.

This thing is amazing and will last! It can chop and blend whole ingredients into a wonderful smoothie. It’s large enough so you can blend even hot coffee in it.

If you use something smaller like a Magic Bullet, you’ll need to let your coffee cool down a bit first. Plus, all of the ingredients won’t fit in some of those single-serving blenders.

What’s the best way to brew coffee for a latte?

The wonderful thing about this recipe is that there isn’t on best way to brew your coffee for it. If you want it to taste really strong, you can make a few shots of espresso.

I just brew a pot of coffee in my drip coffee maker. It’s so easy. I have friends that swear by their pour-over or French press systems.

Since you are going to be adding so much to it, how you brew the coffee doesn’t matter.

What type of coffee tastes best in a latte?

The darker the roast the better. You’ll be adding pumpkin and coconut milk, which will overpower the taste of the coffee. Maybe that’s a good thing. Maybe not.

If you want to be able to taste your coffee, use a darker roast. If not, something light like a Breakfast blend will be more for you.

Whole30 Pumpkin Spice Latte

I need to be honest with you. This latte is mostly Whole30 compliant. There are a few grey areas with it. I’ll explain.

There are two things about this recipe that make it not-so-Whole30-compliant.

First, it’s a SWYPO food. That’s the category of foods that Whole30 says is basically remaking a dessert or treat without sugar so that you can eat it. The goal of Whole30 is to cut your cravings and break your dependence on sweet foods and desserts.

The other ingredient that’s not exactly compliant is vanilla. Vanilla has alcohol in it and Whole30 says no alcohol of any sort – even vanilla.

If you are trying to be super-strict with Whole30, then you might want to skip over this recipe. I understand.

There is no sugar in it and it uses all whole ingredients, so it’s still really healthy for you.

What’s In This Healthy Pumpkin Spice Latte

The entire recipe – along with the ingredient amounts – is in the printable recipe card at the bottom of this post.

Here’s what I used in my latte so you can make sure you have all the ingredients.

Save Time: Use Jarred Pumpkin Pie Spice

I used my own blend of spices. If you have all of them, use them! I like changing how much nutmeg and allspice I use.

You can also save lots of time by just using a teaspoon of pumpkin pie spice. It’s all the same thing.

How To Store Leftover Pumpkin Puree

This recipe only uses 2 tablespoons of pumpkin puree, so you’ll definitely have some left after you open a can.

Please, don’t just put the can in the refrigerator.

The best way to keep your pumpkin puree fresh is to store it in a sealed container. The Rubbermaid Brilliance set has locks on the side that seal perfectly and won’t pop off if you accidentally drop it!
