1 Use analogies and metaphors
Analogies and metaphors are powerful tools to compare and contrast different concepts, domains, or situations. They help you identify similarities and differences, as well as reveal hidden patterns and connections. For example, you can use an analogy to explain a complex idea in simpler terms, or use a metaphor to create a vivid image in your mind. To practice using analogies and metaphors, try to find examples of them in everyday language, literature, or media, and analyze how they work. You can also challenge yourself to create your own analogies and metaphors for various topics or problems.

Personally, I like the approach of Charlie Munger's lattice work of mental models. I like to read a lot of diverse articles of good quality (engineering, religion, philosophy, fiction, history, biography) - connecting dots is the key, but you must have a lot of dots before you can connect them. For example, let's consider the idea of 'Leverage'. The idea of 'lever' originally comes from mechanical engineering and by way of analogy becomes very useful to express diverse ideas in finance, investing, negotiations tactics, and politics.

Embrace diverse perspectives by considering people's views. And that requires you to be proactive in asking for their thoughts and contributions. This includes being comfortable with those who challenge your way of thinking, making an effort to understand diverse perspectives, no matter how unpopular they may be. Especially those that are unconventional.Upskill. Be tech-savvy. AI is being incorporated into many programs. Develop a knack for learning to leverage this to your advantage. E.g. Did you know excel has a built-in feature that allows you to see correlation between unrelated data? I believe there are many similar tools that can catalyze the process of finding connections between conventionally unrelated ideas.

Let's consider a corporate strategy for entering a new market. Analogize this to a military campaign, where market research is equivalent to intelligence gathering, competitors are rival factions, and market entry is a strategic deployment. Metaphorically, a successful market entry can be likened to capturing a key stronghold. By employing these analogies and metaphors, strategists can better navigate the complexities, identify potential obstacles, and orchestrate a cohesive plan that aligns with a broader understanding of strategic maneuvers.

2 Play with puzzles and games
Puzzles and games are fun and engaging ways to stimulate your pattern recognition and connection making abilities. They require you to use logic, intuition, creativity, and strategy to solve problems, find clues, and discover hidden meanings. They also expose you to different types of patterns and connections, such as spatial, temporal, numerical, linguistic, or visual. To improve your skills, play with puzzles and games that challenge your cognitive abilities, such as crossword puzzles, Sudoku, chess, or riddles. You can also invent your own puzzles and games, or modify the rules of existing ones.

3 Learn from diverse sources
Learning from diverse sources can expand your knowledge base, expose you to different perspectives, and spark new ideas. It can also help you find patterns and connections between seemingly unrelated fields, disciplines, or cultures. For example, you can learn how mathematics relates to music, how psychology relates to design, or how history relates to science. To learn from diverse sources, read books, articles, blogs, or podcasts that cover topics outside your comfort zone or expertise. You can also talk to people who have different backgrounds, experiences, or opinions, and ask them questions.

In the context of entering a new market, learning from diverse sources is akin to gathering intelligence from various fronts. Consider it as consulting different industry/ domain experts, reading market reports, and engaging with local influencers—similar to a military commander seeking insights from spies, diplomats, and locals. This diverse knowledge pool acts as a comprehensive reconnaissance, offering a more nuanced understanding of the market terrain. Integrating insights from different sources enhances strategic decision-making and improves the ability to anticipate and respond to emerging patterns and challenges.

Part of becoming an expert in any field is being as educated as you can be about everything within its field. But this also includes information from other seemingly unrelated fields. For example, when learning about science, have you ever considered how it related to history, or how mathematics relates to music?Consider this as building more market knowledge about whatever topic you are studying. Learning from diverse sources about differing perspectives can spark new ideas and passions. Sometimes this can be done by talking to people with different backgrounds and opinions, and simply learning about their perspective and biases.

4 Use mind maps and diagrams
Mind maps and diagrams are visual tools that help you organize, structure, and represent information in a clear and concise way. They help you see the relationships, patterns, and connections between different concepts, facts, or ideas. They also help you generate new insights, associations, or possibilities. For example, you can use a mind map to brainstorm ideas for a project, a diagram to illustrate a process or a system, or a flowchart to show a sequence of events or actions. To use mind maps and diagrams, start with a central topic or question, and branch out with subtopics or details. You can use colors, symbols, images, or keywords to enhance your visual thinking.

In the market entry strategy, employing mind maps and diagrams is akin to creating a strategic battle plan. Visualizing key elements—such as target demographics, opportunity size, competitors, and distribution channels—allows for a comprehensive overview. Imagine these visual aids as a battlefield map, where each component is a troop or a tactical move. This not only facilitates better understanding but also enhances the ability to identify patterns and connections crucial for a successful market entry campaign. Mind maps become the strategic blueprint, enabling a more informed and organized decision-making process.

5 Ask questions and challenge assumptions
Questions and challenges are critical thinking skills that help you explore, examine, and evaluate information in a deeper and more meaningful way. They help you uncover hidden assumptions, biases, or gaps in your knowledge or reasoning. They also help you find patterns and connections that are not obvious or expected. For example, you can ask questions to clarify, expand, or challenge your own or others' views, or to generate new hypotheses or alternatives. You can also challenge assumptions by testing them against evidence, logic, or counterexamples.

Adopting a mindset of asking questions and challenging assumptions is akin to thorough reconnaissance before a military campaign. It involves probing the market landscape, questioning assumptions about consumer behavior, economic trends, and competitor strategies. This approach, analogous to interrogating potential weak points in an opponent's defense, allows strategists to uncover hidden opportunities or vulnerabilities.

Additional strategies to strengthen this ability are building on your existing strengths in listening and systematic thinking:1. Active listening: When engaging with others, truly listen to their ideas and perspectives. Pay attention to the silences, as they can reveal unspoken connections or implicit assumptions. This can lead to valuable shared discoveries.2. Systematic analysis: Once you have identified potential connections, analyze them rigorously. Apply your analytical skills to test their validity, identify underlying principles, and explore potential consequences. This helps refine your insights and turn them into actionable knowledge.

Bringing together diverse themes is critical to building a personal brand which is reflective of your experience, skills, and values. Finding a common thread sometimes is challenging though, for example if you volunteer at an animal shelter but work as a radiologist. These can be tied together by showing a focus on strategic planning which relates to helping animals become adopted at the shelter but diagnosing patients with curable disease on their CT scans and helping them embark on their treatment plans. Both of these personal and professional activities also demonstrate a commitment to clear communication and closed feedback loops with potential adopters as well as ordering physicians.
