I have been watching the first season of The Umbrella Academy alongside my partner, as one of our TV-time endeavors.

I'm two episodes from finishing that first season, but I have come around to it. I think it starts off being dry and static, but finds its groove a few episodes past the pilot.

Also? While I think Aidan Gallagher is giving the best performance, especially considering his age, my favorite performance is from Colm Feore, whose character treats every social encounter like he's trying to win a Biggest Asshole competition.

"Okay, imagine if Charles Xavier was truly a piece of sh*t."
"I mean, that's just Charles Xavier."
"No, I need you to imagine a version of Xavier that drops all polite formalities and actively chooses the meanest words & actions in every interaction."

I thought first season of Umbrella Academy was by far the weakest, but I have no idea if that's a consensus opinion

A couple of bum performances and one really lousy storyline left me feeling mixed on the show, I almost bailed after the first season. I liked everything after considerably more, even if the plotting could generally be described as "a secondary concern"

I'm mostly on the same page. I thought season two was a remarkable uptick in quality. It's also the point where the show started diving deeper into trauma and coping than the kind of surface-level angst the first season got into. And yeah, after season 1, I'd say the actual plot becomes largely tertiary, and purely in service of the vibes and interpersonal drama -- which is very good and has gotten stronger and more complex each season.

I definitely think Doom Patrol ate its lunch right out of the gate, but by the end of season 3 of Umbrella Academy I think it had totally found its groove and carved out a niche for itself. At first blush, it definitely looks like Diet Doom Patrol, but it gets more into familial dysfunction (specifically childhood trauma that informs adult development), and the weight of expectations and pressure from a young age. It's similar subject matter, but they tackle it from a different, more specific angle that makes it resonate more acutely, depending on your own life experiences.

And like, yeah, it totally does the thing where you want to yell at the characters to "JUST f*ckING TALK TO EACH OTHER" but unlike a lot of shows that pull that trick to stir drama, on Umbrella Academy you... kind of get why they all have so much trouble communicating and trusting. It's initially frustrating, but gradually you start to realize that it's usually just kind of sad and understandable. And that at its best, it's maybe hitting a little close to home.

Really is a hell of a show, though.

Let's say there is a secret agent, a tool of the State, with no real identity, residence or possessions beyond what the State will provide for his missions. There is leeway in this, since his temporary hideout has two arcade cabinets (one of them is a Tekken cabinet, I think) and he's apparently allowed to buy a lady a nice handbag.

Let's also say there is a Hallyu/Hollywood actor's manager, who shares an apartment with her friend who owns? and operates a restaurant. The apartment is small enough that they share a bedroom (that bedroom is big enough to be divided into two rooms, though). But she does exist in society as an independent citizen.

Would you say that the secret agent is richer or of a higher class than the actor's manager?

Sheehan delivering that whole “I plan on staying a screw-up until my late twenties, maybe even my early thirties” speech with the grandiosity of Bernard Hill in Return of the King did in fact do some damage to my twenties and early thirties.

“Final chapter”? Hell yeah, okay. I wouldn’t have complained about Arcane going on much longer, but I’m excited about a clear end point after two seasons and if they keep the pacing and plotting as tight and efficient as the first season, that that could make for a solid conclusion.
